Hope everyone had a nice start to the weekend. It was very nice here today after a cool start this morning but spent the day marking calves again. Having only one day off this week, I spent very little time horseback and just worked the pens and had plenty of time to relax between the small herds of cattle they brought in. We had a new kid who worked calves for the first time today and the poor guy was exhausted by the time we finished, but he seemed to have a good time and learned a lot about cowboying. Like most people, he had no idea what all was done and how quickly each calf is vaccinated, tagged, branded and castrated (if it is a male) and quickly realized it is a team effort to get it all done smoothly and quickly. He didn’t have all the gear the experienced guys have so I let him wear my chinks when sweeping pastures to protect his legs from the mesquite thorns. Probably the next time he works, he will have all the gear he needs.
I stayed on the ground most of the day doing the branding and vaccinating. Each time they rode back to get another group of cattle, I took a little nap in the shade under a big oak tree, so I had plenty of time to rest and relax. Hopefully, next time I get out, my work week will be a little lighter and I can help drive them to the pens.
Hope everyone has a nice weekend and some great spring weather to make it even better.
